An Introduction to my Blog
Hello and welcome to my blog, dedicated to providing insights, resources, and information about Alzheimer’s prevention and post sandwich generation life.
My mother, Jane Moreland, lived with Alzheimer’s for nearly a decade. I wrote my book, The Gap Between, to share insights on caregiving with the “younger Mary Morelands” - sandwich generation caregivers trying their best to care for children and an Alzheimer’s parent while thriving in their own lives.
A lot has changed since the fresh ink on my book cover. Before my children left for university, I constantly reminded myself to live in the moment and enjoy the small gifts of everyday life, because someday these gifts would be memories. I am now adjusting to a home full of memories, while trying to make new ones.
In addition to empty nesting, the realization that Alzheimer’s-related changes unbeknownst to me may already be occurring in my brain has spurred a new interest in Alzheimer’s prevention. I cannot stomach the thought of living my last decade as Jane did, much less the corresponding effect on my sons.
Thankfully, recent studies have found that diet and lifestyle changes improve cognitive function and may delay (or maybe even prevent) the onset of Alzheimer’s dementia.
Because of these studies, I pass the time eating blueberries and chasing Vigorous Heart Rate for maximum increase in brain derived neurotropic factor. I participate in Alzheimer’s prevention studies and initiatives. My martini is no longer shaken, stirred, dirty, straight up or with Vodka or Gin, because my doctor says a cocktail isn’t the best choice for Mary’s brain.
With most things related to Alzheimer’s, I find the best information comes from connecting with others walking the same path. Therefore, I decided to create a blog on Alzheimer’s prevention & empty nesting to share what I have learned and hopefully learn from others.
After all, wouldn’t it be wonderful to read a Blog written by another berry fanatic fixated on always recognizing her children and never needing adult babysitting (or underwear)? You know, written by someone who truly “gets you”? Wink.
The purpose of this blog is to share my personal thoughts and encourage discussion. Please consult your doctor before making any dietary or health-related changes, as I am not a doctor or medical professional.
